Restoration of a Driving Licence

If you are seeking to apply for a restoration of your driving licence you can apply after half the term has been served.
If the Court grants an early restoration, you will not get your licence back until two thirds of the ban has expired or two years whichever is the lesser.

Before you can apply for a restoration you must have:

  • Paid any fines attached to the conviction
  • Surrendered your licence to the Motor Tax Office
  • Informed your insure company of the disqualification
  • Where you are not insured you must get a letter from an insurance company stating that the insurance company has been made aware of the disqualification and will be willing to quote you once your licence is restored

You will need to contact the National Drivers Licence Service (N.D.L.S) on 076 108 7880 and get a letter confirming:

  • The date of the disqualification
  • The Court the disqualification was imposed
  • How long the disqualification is for
  • The offence
  • Name and Station of the investigating Guard
  • A list of previous disqualifications

The stamp duty is €55 for a District restoration and €130 for a Circuit restoration.

Please note that you cannot apply for a restoration of your driving licence if the disqualification is for two years or less or where you have more than one disqualification in a 10 year period.

If it is your second disqualification within the last 10 years, you can still have your licence restored but only if you were not disqualified for a period greater than 2 years. Please contact our experienced driving offence solicitor for further advice and details.
